The CFHBRC is a 4-storey, 169,000 sq. ft. facility that opened in 2012 and featured new laboratories, research facilities and office space. The complex achieved LEED® Silver accreditation with ‘green’ design features that include construction waste diversion, a building-wide recycling system, and locally-specified building materials chosen for low VOC, low embodied energy and recyclability. Fritted and sandblasted glass curtain wall elements articulate the different faces of the building, while an aluminum ‘honeycomb’ screen that wraps the south and west facades further mitigates passive solar gain. CGI worked in a design assist capacity and used Schuco UCC-65 SSG system, provided custom screen complete with catwalk, AWS 102 motorized parallel operating windows and a custom silkscreen pattern optimized for design intent.
