The Simpson Querrey Biomedical Research Center is at the core of Chicago’s medical district and will house scientists researching cancer, heart disease, neurodegenerative disorders, diabetes, and other salient areas of study. The building is 14-stories and 600,000 sq. ft. featuring a curved glass exterior, massive cantilevers on 3 sides of building, which allows for open collaboration areas free of obstructions or columns. The space will have an eventual build-out capacity of approximately 1.2 million square feet. Construction will take place over two to three phases with the building eventually standing more than 30 stories and is targeting a minimum LEED® Silver Rating. Key features include dual skin façade on the South facade with integrated intake and exhaust controlled by the BMS. The facade has a 26" deep cavity with an integrated catwalk system, and the single facade has vertical glass exterior fins that are 18" in depth. Curtain wall system used was Custom Schuco UCC 65 SG and custom Schuco FWS stick curtain wall system for the podium.
